| Configure Outlook Tutorial | ||
This tutorial shows you how to configure the e-mail program Microsoft
Outlook that comes with Office 2000. It is in direct reference to an e-mail
account granted via a hosting account at
www.your-site.com. I should note that although
Outlook and Outlook Express are very similar ... they are not the same program.
If you are configuring Outlook Express rather than Outlook please visit the
Configure Outlook Express Tutorial.
If you find problems with this tutorial or need assistance call me or e-mail me at
robb@datamenus.com. What you will need to complete this set of steps is: |
| 1) | On the Tools menu, click Accounts. |
| 2) | Click Add, and then click Mail. |
| 3) | Enter your name associated with the account. Then click Next. |
| 4) | Enter your full e-mail address which should be of the form USERNAME@DOMAIN.EXT. Where USERNAME is your username assigned by your-site, DOMAIN is your domain name and EXT is your extension such as .com, .org, .net or .biz. Then click Next. |
| 5) |
Enter your incoming mail server address which is pop.DOMAIN.EXT
where DOMAIN is your domain name and EXT is your extension such as .com, .org, .net or .biz.Enter your outgoing mail server address. Because of varying levels of support by your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and different kinds of connections (DSL or Cable or dialup) determining the outgoing mail server can be difficult. Firstly, try smtp.DOMAIN.EXT If that doesn't work then contact your ISP support
line and ask them the SMTP server address. For example Earthlink uses smtpauth.earthlink.net.Then click Next. |
| 6) | Enter your full e-mail address in the Account name field. Enter your password associated with your e-mail address. Check Remember password if you do not want to enter it in each time you access your e-mail. Do not check SPA. Then click Next. |
| 7) | Choose your internet connection method. If you are on a Network at work or using a cable modem at home choose the LAN option. If you already have a dialup connection configured then select "I establish my internet connection manually". Then click Next & proceed to 8. |
| If you are not on a Local Area Network and have an existing dialup account already configured choose 'Use an existig dialup account' and select your dialup account from the list. Then click Next & proceed to 8. |
Note: This section of this tutorial explains how to configure an internet
connection, so, for most people, unless you don't have a connection proceed to step 8. If your computer is not configured with a LAN or a Dialup account then choose 'Create a new dialup connection' and click Next. Enter your ISP dialup number and click Next. |
| Enter your user name and password for your ISP account and click Next. |
| Give your new dialup account a name and click Next. |
| 8) | Click Finish. |
| 9) | Highlite the new account name and click Properties. |
| 10) | Click the "Servers" tab and check "My server requires authentication" and then click the Settings button. |
| 11) |
If you are using an outgoing smtp mail server address of the form smtp.DOMAIN.EXT
then follow 11i) but if you are
using your ISPs outgoing smtp mail server address follow 11ii).11i) Select "Use same settings as my incoming mail server". Click Ok. 11ii) Select the "Log on using" radio button. Enter your ISP username which for many ISPs is the full e-mail address associated with your ISP. Enter your password for your ISP account and check Remember password. Click Ok and click Ok again. |
| 12) |
Optional: Technically you are actually finished configuring your e-mail
account but you can do additional things such as setting an account as a
default (because you may have more than one account that you have
configured within Outlook Express) by highlighting the Mail account and
clicking "Set as Default" or you may want to alter other "Properties". For example: You may want to rename the Mail account name because they use the mail server name which isn't overly user friendly or maybe you want to uncheck the "Include this account when receiving mail or synchronizing" option so that you will only connect to this mail server when specifically asked. These changes can be made by clicking the "Properties" button and then clicking the "General" tab. |
| 13) | Connect to the internet if you are not already connected and click the "Send/Recv" button on the main Outlook Express window. | |
